If the protocol does not specify anything clearly just because there was no distinction at that time, then why some people on this list believe that sending character codes in a protocol request in not valid? If we don't allow sending character codes in protocol request then all Unicode encoded TrueType fonts are unusable at server side. Forget about shaping.
