I've often found it lacks enough description. For example:
What chars are supported in a iso10646 font? It seems very
expensive to XQueryFont to get the per-char metrics so one
can tell which chars are supported.
How does one tell the language groups that a iso10646 font
is appropriate for?
How does one tell if a JISX0201 font is missing the ascii range?
How would one tell if a TrueType font has embedded bitmaps
and how does one choose the embedded bitmap vs the outline?
How does an app say to anti-alias a TrueType font vs not AA?
(separately from embedded bitmaps)

I'd guess that XLFD won't go away quickly. However I do believe
that as TrueType fonts come in we will want to rethink how
to get information about the available fonts and how to control
what options are selected.
