Are you saying that the size of the compressed glyphs is O(s^f) where
's' is the height of the glyphs and 1 < 'f' < 2?

I was hoping we'd find a simple compression technique that could yield 
a value for 'f' of less than one; certainly the regularity of the data 
leads one to believe that it is possible.

If we can find such a compression scheme, we can easily add it to the 
Render extension, both for glyph images as well as regular image data.
