I will have to run then Xfbdev in the context of gdbserver.

I will give it a go on Monday and send you the backtrace (Since the whole target 
system crashes, this might be tricky however).

Is there a major difference between loading fonts from a local fontserver or loading 
the
fonts from the local filesystem?[In both ways I access thesame fontfiles and use 
thesame font-backends.]

The server is configurated to install all configuration files etc under his own 
directory (NothingOutsideProjectRoot is enabled).
Would this affect local font access?

Server crashes are never "normal behavior".

Local font access works fine on an iPAQ with TinyX.

Can you generate a stack backtrace?
