JC> Of the fonts I have licensed, Lucida Bright Oblique is the only one I
JC> can think of with a non [0.001 0 0 0.001 0 0] matrix, which obliques
JC> by just changing the matrix.
A large number of oblique (as opposed to italic) fonts use this trick;
for example, the Type 1 versions of the Lucidux/Luxi family, and also
IBM's and Adobe's versions of Courier. The PS code around the font
will typically ensure that only one copy of the charstrings will
remain in memory if both the roman and the oblique versions are
downloaded to a PS interpreter.
I cannot currently reproduce your bug with Type 1 metrics, but I'll
keep it in mind when testing before the next publicly available draft.
