Yes to both questions; I've tried to comprehend how Mozilla manages MathML 
font mapping, and I haven't quite figured out how I can reconcile that 
with what I'd like it to do (independent of Xft/fontconfig/et al).

I think having code which "knows" the layout of certain fonts is not an 
ideal design and I'm hoping that there is an alternative.  I looked into 
this for a day or so, and then got sidetracked in other more pressing 
concerns.

It may be that the best we can do is replicate the current embedded 
encoding tables for Xft -- that's more than possible given the Xft API, 
it's just not my ideal solution.
