But that makes the aliases much less usefull.

It would be better imho to have the aliases displayed, and if copyrighted
names are a concern just avoid shipping a sample config file with those.

Another possibility would be to make the aliases names show as aliases
(eg by adding "(user alias)" after the name).

Or a third possibility, to have two classes of aliases, one displayable
and another not displayable (as some aliases are not intended to actually
show up, but just avoid that a request to an explicit but missing font
be displayed incorrectly) 


There are indeed to sort of purposes for the aliases; one is to just
be able to ship a default config file that will have good results in
all or most cases, by providing fallback fonts that trie to have
close appearences.

But the other purpose is for users to define their own preferences of
fontsets and have them accessilbe by simple names.
