I haven't followed this thread at all, however it occurs to me that you can get a Graphics object from Batik (can't you?), draw into it using the java.awt.Graphics API, and then output that as SVG.
So couldn't you create a JCheckBox and paint it to an SVG Graphics() ? Maybe I'm talking rubbish but I thought this was possible. M.
