I'd try nested tables first, cells spanning rows occasionally create nasty problems at page breaks.

Thanks for the warning, but I *shouldn't* have any problems where I'm doing this, because it's in our rather large region-before (medical billing requires tons of info on every page). If there's a page break issue, I've got other problems. (hehehe...)
I'm still wondering, and you're probably the person to ask: is FOP faster with spanned rows or nested tables.
