as i mentioned, i created mine using linux's "import" command and taking a snapshot of a simple X client. running the "file" command on that GIF file told me it was a "GIF image data, version 89a". beyond that, i'm not sure. i notice you're using a URL reference. can you copy that file into the local directory to see if that makes a difference?
