Regarding embedding truetype fonts I can report that it is fairly easy to embed them (I embedded Lucida Sans Unicode for russian character support). You can find an extensive tutorial right here: http://xml.apache.org/fop/fonts.html
I'd be very interested in the source code as I know I'll have to solve the same problem in the near future as well, so if you can share parts of it I'd be grateful...

Hi All,
is it possible to generate a layout such as this:
http://freelancedeveloper.org/lance/sample.gif using
XSL:FO? In particular, I will need to be able to do
the following based on XML data:
1) create basic bar charts
2) control fonts and be able to use truetype server
fonts
3) be able to have text with vertical orientation
4) auto-paginate resulting PDF andgenerate table of
contents within it
