I don't really want to jump into this discussion, but since I was the one that used 72 points per inch in a calculation related to this thread, I must. There is at least one more definition of point, whether created or merely adopted by Adobe, I don't know. Both PostScript and PDF use 72-units-per-inch as the default definition for the size of a unit of user space. This is commonly called a point, and is the basis for FOP's sizes, and therefore AFAIK, the answer I previously gave was correct.
