Nope, no dice. The internals of the Java2D rendering code do things like casting all fonts to a FontMetricsMapper, so unless I make all fonts of that class it's not going to work.
Right now I'm trying to hack the internals of the PDF renderer so that the fonts it loads are a hybrid which get the embedding info from the configuration but the metrics info from AWT.
