The bug you mention was indeed the problem. So I'm setting linefeed-treatment="treat-as-whitespace" and hyphenate="true" in conditions of narrow columns, and linefeed-treatment="preserve" and hyphenate="false" in conditions of wide text areas. Much thanks,
