Yes the glyphs available depend on the font-family selected in your FO. List items are split into Labels and Body elements. Its completely normal to use one font for the label and a different font for the body. A lot of bullet style glpyhs are available in the ZapfDingbats font. Then you can use a Font containing Japanese glyphs for the list body.
