I can't reproduce your problem. I downloaded just now a FOP 0.94 binary
package (Java 1.4) and tested like here described:
http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/0.94/fonts.html#truetype-metrics
and it works.
(Of course the avalon, commons-logging and -io libraries have slightly
other names. You have to adopt the command line.)
But a "NoClassDefFoundError" means generally that the classpath is not
correct.
