This does solve the rendering problem, but introduces an unwanted
newline (as the space will be followed by the nested table block).
Not if you put the non-breaking space inside the fo:table-cell:
Ah, indeed in this case this does the trick. Unfortunately, in more
complex cases, fo:table-cell elements with nothing but contained
fo:table structures seem to need whitespace too, which will cause
newlines. I guess I'll just wait until the end of the month ;-).
