hi That was a good hint :-) I had installed sun java, but had not realised that I had java-gcj installed also.
I have now changed the symlinks in /etc/alternatives/ja* to point to my sun java binaries in /usr/java/jre1.6.0_05/bin/java It works now, and I can go back to tweaking my docbook out.
