IIC, the 'padding' is actually not padding in the strict sense. It
results from what is called the line's 'half-leading'. In text
paragraphs, this is responsible for the regular line-spacing (= 2 x
10% of the current font-size for each line).
Your options to avoid that: set either font-size or line-height to 0pt
on the surrounding block, and the spacing will disappear.
