Thanks Pascal, that clears up the reasons for the issues we've been having.
I have tried using the -Djava.awt.headless=true command line option, but
this doesn't seem to have any effect - the $fop_exec_command that we're
generating is below:

We're executing this from a script with the following line:
eval $fop_exec_command
But we still get the display error, unless we set the X display. Fyi the
java version we're running is :
$ java -version
java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-44)
Any ideas why this isn't working?
