I don't know for sure if the Trunk has done anything to fix the problem with finding renderers. I forget if or where I might have heard that and don't have time to check right now. If you really need images other than SVG to work I would start by testing the Trunk.
In addition to issues with image formats, I couldn't decide what form to use for the path to an image file for an external src= tag.
