Something which happened to me (unrelated to rotating text) but I noticed a difference between the PDF viewing engines of Adobe and Ubuntu's Document Viewer.
There is some bug in the way the underlying library (used by Document Viewer) does rendering - I cannot remember the specifics but the bug was there still a few months ago.
