I agree with you wholeheartedly; I've had the same problem with recommendation; once it's installed it works great, but the installation is such a pain, it's old, and it's limited.
The new installer is blocked for both FL2 and FL3 by my work trying to port newer anaconda over to Conary. I'm much of the way through, but the next (and I think last) big thing needs some concentrated effort and I've only had short chunks of time to work on it. Basically, I'm trying to change the way mk-images and upd-instroot work; they are designed to go query a yum repository and build a chroot environment dynamically from that yum repository, and then clean things up by filename. I'm changing them to work from the installed packages to run within rmake, so that the conary info on package versions used will actually be the package versions in the constructed templates that are used to build images. If there is someone else who wants to work on that with me, I would be very happy to share, but so far I've been the only volunteer, and between family and travel commitments I've come up short the last few weeks on finishing that project. Once it's finished, though, the same stuff will work for FL2 and FL3. Totally independently, we're trying to get a change to image building so that the old installer (which does not have, for example, ext4 support) can be used to create install images that at least have new content.
