Thanks for the fix - this is obviously a much more thorough fix than mine, with 
full error handling.

However, I'm afraid one fix is still missing (a fix of a non-error condition): 
in pack.c, function pack(), the result buffer is not freed after being 
converted to a Python object (AFAICT, PYBYTES_FromStringAndSize() copies the 
buffer, does not assume ownership of it).
