Kalau cerita gini harus kembali ke sejarah jaman awalnya mikrokomputer
(jaman Altair dsb).  Saat itu relatif "scene" pemrograman seperti open
source, orang saling bertukar coding.  (ada club computer terkenal, di
mana orang seperti Steven Jobs, dll sering nongkrong).

Ketika itu Gates menjual BASIC-nya yang ditulis dg Alan Kay (pakai
fasilitas kampus.h.eheh) banyak orang main copy tanpa beli, hingga
akhirnya dia menulis sebuah surat yang terkenal "A letter to ....." yang
isinya meminta temen-temenya tak mengcopy software, dan beralasan bahwa
hanya dg mendapat duit orang akan kreatif.

Tentunya tanggapan orang-orang bermacam-macam, ada yang kesel (karena
mereka tahu Gates mengembangkan softwarenya dg cara tukar-tukaran soure
code juga).  Nah mulai saat itulah populer software komputer "dijual"
tanpa source code. (Saya sempat baca suratnya Bill Gates salinannya ada di
Museum Komputer Paderborn).

Nah dalam mengembangkan produk MS-pun Gates banyak menerapkan strategi
"beli software orang, dan kembangkan, paket, lalu jual".   Berikut ini

Object Linking Environment OLE 
Microsoft settled a suit with Wang Labs over patent infringement
code portions of OLE which is also the heart of Microsoft's ActiveX 

PowerPoint 
This presentation software package was renamed and re branded
after Microsoft's purchase of Forethought Inc in 1987 

SQL Server 
This important database product is based on code purchased from
Sybase in 1988 

Visual Basic 
Ruby the foundation for Microsoft's highly important Visual
Basic product was purchased from Cooper Software in 1991 

Visual C 
Microsoft purchased the Lattice C code compiler which became
Visual C Microsoft's software development environment
          
Visual SourceSafe 
Purchased from OneTree Software Shortly after OneTree's
SourceSafe was released Microsoft preannounced a similar application 
called Microsoft Delta which failed to sell Microsoft then purchased 
OneTree and renamed SourceSafe as Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 

Windows 
Technologies used in Windows multitasking came to Microsoft with
their purchase of Dynamical Systems in 1986 Portions of the interface 
were licensed from Apple Computer also in 1986 

XENIX 
Microsoft's version of Unix was actually written under contract
by the Santa Cruz Operation(SCO) 

The Intellimouse, which Goldtouch is now suing for patent
violations over. Seems Goldtouch had a meeting with M$ and tried to sell 
them their ergonomic mouse technology. M$ didn't buy, but 6 months later 
released a mouse which looked remarkably simular...

Hal di atas sah-sah saja dalam bisnis, yang jadi masalah adalah kalau MS
ingin membuat prouknya "Open Source" maka artinya:

- Dia harus menyelesaikan dulu masalah lisensi terhadap pemilik code asli
  ataupun persh ke 3 yang membantu mengerjakan code-nya.  Karena tidak
  semua copy rigth-nya dimiliki oleh MS.  Contohnya SGI untuk melepas XFS
  membutuhkan 1 tahun lebih untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini

- Dia harus membersihkan dulu code-nya sehingga tidak
  "malu-maluin".  Karena kecenderungan pengembangan di MS, sering sekali
  terjadi kondisi tak modular, dan duplikasi.
