The mail server at the university where I work misclassified the mails sent by the forum software as spam too. When I first tried to register with my regular e-mail address as Jan Schreiber or Jan (I don't remember), I never received the confirmation mail, most likely because it didn't get through the server-side spam filter. Don't know if this is a common problem. (That's how I ended up with MrSpock; it was the first name that came to my mind when the phorum software told me the name I wanted was already taken. By myself, uselessly.) :-( ;-)
