This is a message to both T13 and T10... Even after placing a big bold message at the top of the main page of my web site (www.ata-atapi.com) I continue to receive emails all the time asking if I know were DOS drivers for ATAPI CD/DVD devices can be found. These would be the two driver files that you would normally place on a DOS boot floppy (like a DOS recovery diskette). One of these files has always been named MSCDEX.EXE (and it can be found on most Win9x systems in the "\windows\command" directory. Normally MSCDEX.EXE is loaded by having the command "MSCDEX ..." in the DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The other file, which goes by many names, maybe ATAPICD.SYS or IDECD.SYS, is more device specific and should be on a floppy that is packaged with every new CD/DVD device OR should be easy to find at a manufacturer's web site. Normally this *.SYS file is loaded by having a DEVICE= command in the DOS CONFIG.SYS file. HOWEVER, I would sure like to know: a) Does anyone know of a generic *.SYS CD driver file that should work with any "standard" ATAPI CD-ROM drive? b) Does anyone know where such driver files can be found (other than the at a manufacturers web site where it probably can't be found)? I am getting really tired of this crap. I refuse to be the dumping ground for all you ATAPI device manufacturers that do not insure that your customers receive or have access to the appropriate driver files for their new CD/DVD devices especially when someone needs to create a DOS "recovery diskette". I have found a few web sites that claim to have driver files (such as http://www.driverzone.com/). But it is clear that such web sites are not the solution (if they were I would not be getting all these requests for help all the time). So what are we going to do about this??? YES, I am making this your problem too!!! I am tired of this crap and the lack of tech support that seems to come with ATAPI devices from retailers and from the device manufacturers. *** Hale Landis *** www.ata-atapi.com *** Subscribe/Unsubscribe instructions can be found at www.t13.org.
