So you think that there is *no* information from the PRML "read
channel" that is also input to the ECC correction algorithm? You
think the ECC correction is done purely and only on the digital data
in the drive's buffer ignoring any and all information from the read
channel about the "quality" of that data? Even 40 years ago "signal
quality" information from the "read channel" was used by ECC
algorithms to correct digital data.
