Mike,

SCSI SPC-3 (T10/1416-D Revision 06, 5 April 2002) includes two 16-byte
commands:
        Read Attribute (0x8C)
        Write Attribute (0x8D)

Both of these new commands require a 16-byte CDB. Their intended use is to
access MAM (Medium Auxiliary Memory) on Tape cartridges.

Folks, I made a mistake in my first response to this mail thread.

At the time of writing I didn't see that 12 vs 16 byte CDB is indicated in
the Atapi-Identify response data. I did a search for "12" in the ATA6
document, but it didn't stop at the Atapi-Identify command, thus my
response. Additionally, I've never seen a 16-byte CDB device.

I'd think that this would be a feature that should be described in either
the command description or the "General Operational Requirements" section
(6).

Thanks, MKE.

I don't see a spec value for the CDB length in the ATA/ATAPI-6 spec, so it
doesn't explicitly allow or disallow sizes other than 12 bytes. Note that
the SFF 8020r26 document states specifically that the CDB is 12 bytes (6
words).

MKE.

Eh? I thought ...

T13 Atapi says in the first few "word"s of op xA1 IdentifyPacketDevice data
whether the host should always copy Out a 12 or 16 byte "packet" at BSY DRQ
C/D I/O = 0 1 command out time.

T13 has no other comment on how long the Cdb is, except that by implication
it can't be longer than 16 bytes.

No?

Thanks in advance,
Pat LaVarre
