No, it's not trying to improve or replace ATAPI. Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) supports both SCSI (SAS) and ATA (SATA) drives. Most SAS HBAs (and even some SATA HBAs) present a SCSI interface to the operating system, and translate SCSI to ATA in their OS miniport-level driver and/or HBA firmware when talking to the ATA devices. This project is an attempt to standardize that translation so software, HBA vendors, and drive vendors can predict what's going to happen. It will probably end up as a technical report, not a full-fledged standard. It will cover things like: * Basic SCSI reads and writes -> ATA reads and writes * SCSI INQUIRY command - an ATA IDENTIFY DEVICE or IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE is probably generated, but there are substantial differences in the data they return. A SCSI INQUIRY VPD page might be defined to return the raw IDENTIFY DEVICE contents. * Mode pages - the Write Cache Enable bit in the SCSI Caching mode page needs to control the ATA drive write cache, for example. * Translating errors - build reasonable SCSI sense data from the ATA task file results * SCSI to ATAPI - if the ATA device is really ATAPI, then the SCSI command can be embedded in an ATA PACKET command -- Rob Elliott, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hewlett-Packard Industry Standard Server Storage Advanced Technology https://ecardfile.com/id/RobElliott > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On > Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Thursday, April 15, 2004 12:57 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [t13] FYI: T10 news: SCSI to ATA Translation Study > Group meeting > > > This message is from the T13 list server. > > > This just in.
