It will help present a consistent look to the OS - to the SCSI class
driver and any application generating SCSI CDBs.

It will define a base set of SCSI features that software can use across
HBAs. For example, they should all support the same set of commands and
task management functions. INQUIRY data for the same drive will remain
the same (or at least be predictably different) if the HBA is changed.
It will probably address multiple-initiator issues, so two HBAs in the
same SAS domain are not totally confused when they both find a SATA
drive (which doesn't understand multiple hosts). SCSI reservation
command translation will be interesting.

If an OEM has qualified a SATA disk drives with one HBA running a
certain OS, this will help ensure that it also works with other HBAs.
If HBAs chose to translate differently (different commands or chose
different field values within the same commands commands), it'd be as if
the OS changed too. If everyone has a common baseline for testing,
interoperability should improve.
