Since the ID word table text doesn't match the bit description text I think there is probably a problem - but it can probably wait until ATA-8 or until there is some good reason to publish an ATA-7 errata.

Here is the problem...

In the ID data table ID word 85 bit 10 is described as "V" (variable) with the text "1 = HPA enabled". This implies that when the bit is 0 the drive's current capacity matches the value returned by READ NATIVE MAX (HPA is disabled), and when the bit is 1 the drive's current capacity is less that the value returned by READ NATIVE MAX (HPA is enabled).

So how many drives do not treat ID word 85 bit 10 as "variable" (and turn it on and off as implied by the ID data table description) and instead simply set it to the same value as ID word 82 bit 10 (as implied by the text description)?

Note that ID word 85 bit 10 is not described in the general description of the HPA feature in section 6.x of the document.
