One technical question I had on this feature set that is not addressed
by your proposal:
Why don't SECURITY ERASE UNIT and SECURITY DISABLE PASSWORD also
decrement the attempt counter like SECURITY UNLOCK if the password is
bad? They all effectively perform an unlock (SECURITY ERASE UNIT does a
lot more).
jhat> This was never part of the ATA security feature set,
jhat> which dates back to ATA-3 (1996), and nobody complained before.
A few editorial nits:
In proposed 1.1.1, "Security Retries Expired" is introduced, but never
used anywhere.
jhat> In ATA8, this is referred to by the term 'attempt limit'.
jhat> It would be appropriate to use a consistent term everywhere.
In proposed table 1, the fact that the attempt limit counter is
decremented should be noted in the appropriate cells.
jhat> The purpose of Table 1 is primarily to show the relation
jhat> between the 'security level', which password is used,
jhat> and some commands that care. There are other considerations
jhat> and restrictions for all of these commands. Table 1 is not
jhat> intended to be all-encompassing - - it provides a cross-section
jhat> of a complex set of requirements.
Section 1.10.2 introduces a "the the"
jhat> Thank you for reporting this.
