I agree with Jim, there is a lot about the capability that is vendor specific. The main difference between the modes is that the device is not required to do a media access. This means that if you are rebuilding a RAID and you are unable to restore a sector, you can cause the drive to return an error. This error can be returned immediately, or it can be returned after a media access. The drive vendor is given a bit of latitude on how to implement the error condition because all the host needs is an abort on any read of the sector. This mode will also lend itself to use is an environment where some drives may have a 4K sector and other drives may have a 512 byte sector. ------------------------------------------------- Curtis E.
