There are two very good reasons for putting the NV cache on the disk,
itself:
      - power consumption
      - separation of data
--------------
Power consumption by rotating media is greater than that of the computer
and it makes sense to make it possible to reduce the power where it
makes the most sense.
-------------
The world no longer consists of storage devices that do not move around
and are hard-cabled inside a computer enclosure.

Removeable ATA storage is a common (new) reality and is requiring that
many previous assumptions be reexamined and is requiring that new
requirements be created: External devices and RAID are just at the top of
the list.

If the nv cache is separate from the rotating media, then if the rotating
media
is separated from the nv cache

a) if the rotating media is then attached to a different host BEFORE
the data has been synchronized, then the cache and disk
will be out of synch and data WILL be lost

b) if different rotating media is attached to the existing nvcache,
then data corruption may again occur

c) if you throw security considerations into the mix, then
you can easily get data you thought was secure exposed to
the world. This is REALLY bad stuff.

There are many other scenarios where bad things can happen when
the nv cache and rotating media have the possibility of being separated.
--------------
Would you prefer that your storage be cheap but your computer be more
expensive ?
or would you prefer that your data be safe, secure and reliable and consume
less power ?

Besides, nobody is being forced to buy these new hybrid drives !!!
It's a choice !!!

Thank You !!!

I was asked to send my opinion to the entire list... so here it is...

If NV cache is needed for some reason (perhaps to get around so design
flaw in an OS?) then...

NV cache on the motherboard makes a lot more sense and should be a lot
cheaper and more reliable and much more functional. Putting NV cache
in a drive is really stupid - it costs more and makes drive less reliable.

Its just like the stupid AV commands - it makes a drive more complex and
less reliable just to avoid putting some extra memory in the DVR.
