I can confirm the problem and the solution.

ATI graphics card - beg/borrow/steal a non-ATI card, try again and report
back.
There is a known problem with ATI cards and Protel. Many (not all it
seems) report that Protel locks up often with ATI cards.
I would suggest that it would be well worthwhile trying another card from a
different maker and see how you go.
I use nVidia based cards without any trouble and I think Matrox are well
reputed with the quality of their drivers and support.
