Wayne,
Thanks for the feedback. Most of the PADS designs I need to translate are
fairly simple designs, so I guess I will go ahead with it.
I am impressed with your attempts to translate the pdf data to schematic
format, PADS has a neat add on their product for translating PDF data to a
create a die footprint, it was impressive. Maybe you can convince Protel to
look at your code and work something out for some free upgrades......maybe
not.
Is Spectra worth it? If your have a few designers, and are creating allot
of designs, Spectra is worth every penny. Personally I think OrCad is also a
great product, but when Cadence bought them out, I was never able to get any
support nor did they offer to send me a bill for upgrading my software. I
guess Cadence is no longer interested in selling or supporting one seat any
more.
.15 per pin is a good price, if you only need to send a board out once in
while. But not having the router in front of you to see how it behaves
during a route is a real disadvantage. I am connected by marriage to a
Software geek and an investor, we had a dinner / meeting last summer to
discuss the possibility of developing software to complete with
Spectra....The conclusion was it would take better than $1 million and
maybe two years to get a comparable product up and running without marketing
cost. The time table for releasing a router may be bad now because, PADs,
Mentor, now have their own routers, and I think Protel, Accel, and even
Cadence are re-writing code. 4-5 years ago the time table looked better
than it does now. I am hoping, praying, begging, Protel to have a good
router in their next release.
I will give you a call on Tuesday, when I am down in Springfield, VA
