There is system wide preferences to set the pin number and name margins -
Option|Preferences (from memory - I could be wrong).
But this is flawed as it is:
1) Set in schematic - when it should be a attribute of the Sch library symbol.
and
2) Does not travel with the sch (so someone else opening the design may see
it differently from you)
A better solution would be to allow the pin names and numbers to be
repositioned with respect to the pins - and put appropriate global options
to allow a user to set new margins for all pins in a symbol, or even all
symbols in a sch Lib, easily.
Apart from that I can't think of any other alternative to Brian's advice.
