Hi Jeff,

My experience with UL compliance has shown that trace to trace spacing
is dependent on what you are building and its application.

The products that I am involved with (variable speed drives) are
designed to comply with UL508C - Power Conversion Equipment. This standard
contains tables outlining both clearance (through air) and creepage (across
surface) distances required to obtain compliance. In the case of PCB
assemblies, these distances depend on physical factors such as PCB material,
environment and source of supply.

UL also allows us to refer to a further standard: UL840 - Insulation
Coordination

If you are designing a piece of office equipment, for example, you will
need to refer to a completely different standard. So Jeff, you will need to
refer to the specific UL standard that applies to the category of product
that you are designing although UL840 would be a good place to start. Please
keep in mind though that I have no affiliation with UL and that they have
the final say on compliance or non-compliance.

When its all said and done I think you pretty much have to consult UL
directly if you need a concrete answer.

Sorry if this causes more confusion than it solves - just my 0.02c worth
of experience.

Good Luck,
