Some people just need simplicity. They can't afford to hack the gconf or some such all day. Hence a need for better version of Ubuntu or something even better like Mandriva. I have seen many parents use Ubuntu and just go "Oh I can't figure this out and I have 2 kids to look after...." (You get the idea) Even though Ubuntu is great for beginners, there's so much room for improvement on user aspect of it. Freedom is important but it seems it's nature comes secondary to them unlike us who started using free,libre softwares mainly because we get access to source code and have time to tinker around with it to make it better.
