I've read about numerous open source projects gone awry/fork because there is absolutely no funding for programmers to sit home and work on the code. Let alone getting a job fully devoted to open source projects. Big fishes like IBM, HP, Redhat insist on making Open source the defacto standard but they still require ROA because at the end of the day it's a business. If you look at where Ubuntu makes money, it's through charity, professional enterprise support. They do not make money through giving CDs/DVDs to users or through IRC support or through their forums. These open source hobos are the "heroes" of the revolution and I salute them for what they are doing. These projects have realised that making freely available source is -the- way of the future. Look at Java itself as well. There are numerous projects where programmers work for the sheer love of programming and freedom than for getting money. Although getting funding wouldn't hurt. ;) The way in which these programmers work is unique and their tool are unique as well. For e.g., look at how long it'll take for windows to come up with better version of their stacking smashing prevention in their VC++ (similar to pax), valgrind and metasploit framework, git, moimoin, mailman etc.... These tools are all available for free (both clause 1&2). Look at KDE,Gnome,Fluxbox, XFCE or even plain X. They are so much advanced than their counterpart Windows. Look at virtualization softwares available for Linux (Vmware, dosbox, Qemu, Xen) and compare to Windows (Microsoft Virtual Server [buggy as hell]). Again most of them available for free. Lastly, the kernel itself. Even though I wouldn't say Linux kernel is bug free and insanity, it itself is so much faster than windows. Try running for e.g., Windows on 128mb ram with say 533Mhz clock speed. This is impossible! Now try the same with say Linux kernel (plain vanilla of course) and X on top of it. It'll run as hell smooth! The cards have changed and if Microsoft's playing dumb, I bet it'll be bankrupt in few years time (Make that within next 5-10 years). Power lies with users not big corporations. Anyway getting long now. So I stop.
