Dear all, as part of two EU projects (FLOSSMETRICS and OpenTTT) we have prepared a two-part guide designed to help in the adoption process of open source software by companies and public administrations. The first part covers topics like what is OSS, myths and realities of OSS, adoption best practices, software selection, business models and more; the second part is a catalog of 165 applications divided into broad cathegories: infrastructural software (ranging from network and system management to security), ERP and CRM applications, groupware, document management, content management systems (CMS), VoIP, graphics/CAD/GIS systems, desktop applications, engineering and manufacturing, vertical business applications and eLearning. While the guide was originally designed for Europe, I believe that it may be useful also in developing countries; it is distributed under a very liberal CC license that allows also for commercial use (to allow the use of it as part of dissemination material of companies interested in OSS, or for training). The guide is available at http://guide.conecta.it/ (warning: the catalog is a 20Mb pdf file) and two more releases are planned.
