Open source app challenges Microsoft Project James Archibald, January 23, 2008 *Linux, Unix, Windows, Mac:* Open source and software as a service company, Projity <http://openproj.org/>, is going head-to-head with Microsoft Project, having released its open source scheduling application, OpenProj 1.0 <http://openproj.org/openproj>. Available for Linux, Unix, Mac or Windows, OpenProj opens native Microsoft Project Files and the developers claim that it has equivalent functionality to the proprietary Office product it is attempting to oust. The initial beta was announced late last year and since then 200 000 users across 132 countries have joined and tested the software. So far, Projity has been translated into Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, Korean and Chinese, with many other languages pending. "OpenProj has given the marketplace an alternative to commercial project management software on the desktop that is available on Linux, Unix, Mac or windows and now in localized languages around the world," said Marc O'Brien, chief executive of Projity. In addition to making OpenProj freely available, Projity offers a software as a service, Project-ON-Demand, which can be accessed by multiple users via a browser. Migration between the two programs is said to be seamless. It will be interesting to see how well this open source alternative is picked up, filling an open source gap left by the successful OpenOffice.orgcollection of programs. According to the release, Project is installed on seven percent of all desktops with Microsoft Office.
