Hi VCG,

Since, you say that your laptop previously supported higher resolution,
probably your xorg.conf is not properly configured for higher resolution.
Google for editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf to support the desired resolution.

And as far as loading speed is concerned, you can't point out single reason.
There may be a lot. It is difficult to pin-point something.
