Dear Sulabh,
You need to first check if NetworkManager service is
running. The script is located in /etc/init.d, you can try to restart
the service by executing (as a root) /etc/init.d/NetworkManager
restart. After you've confirmed that the service is running, you need
to check if the NetworkManager is applet is loaded. In GNOME, check
System > Preferences > Personal > Sessions. Check if there is a
startup program called "NetworkManager" and is enabled (i.e. the check
box prior to its name is checked). If you can't find it in the list,
you can manually add it. Follow these steps to add manually:
1. Click on the "Add" button.
2. In the dialog box, fill these values:
    a) Name: Network Manager
    b) Command: nm-applet --sm-disable
    c) Comment (Optional): Control your network connections
3. Finally click on the "Add" button of that dialog box.
4. Log out
5. Log in

You must be able to see the NetworkManager applet now.

Regards,
Abhishek
