wlink were having problem of their own so may be thats the reason, you can also connect to pppoe from networkmanager just go to network manager > connections > point... and follow the procedure with user name password setting you should use the location /etc/network/interfaces (considering u r using nmapplet of hardy and ubuntu hardy)
