Basically you have options with ubuntu installation one is inside windows or with windows side by side or the single ubuntu installation. I would recommend you to install just ubuntu. here is the graphical install page that would give you idea after you boot live cd https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall. As for mediaplayer ubuntu comes with Totem Media Player. You have to install gstreamer-codecs to run mp3 and all. Just do "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras". This will install all codecs, flash-plugin and jre environment. Or you can install gstreamer bad and ugly plugin one by one through synaptic and software center. You may want to run Skype if you do also enable canonical partner repositories. Other media player options are: VLC mplayer with SMplayer as frontend Parole etc.
