You cannot use Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD to fix your problem.. There are 2 causes for that:
1) Ubuntu 10.04 uses Grub2 unlike Ubuntu 8.04 2) It seems like while installing Ubuntu 10.04 you made an ext4 filesystem which unluckily isn't supported by Ubuntu 8.04 Try using Ubuntu 9.10 or Higher to fix your problem...
