Installing apps from tarballs actually helps you learn. And I would say you should go with it if you are testing with them and would like to see how you could make them work to your need.
Lifewithqmail and qmailrocks are two good resources. One another note, if you don't have any specific reason to use qmail. I would seriously recommend you use postfix or exim as your MTA, reason being qmail is old now. And many things that you can do in an instant with other MTAs, you would have to patch your way around or do some serious efforts with qmail. --Sent from my Android phone.
