Sounds like that someone needed a bit of netiquette (RFC1855 specifically found here: http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt ). There is no simple way for a sender to convey a mailing list vs direct reply preference, so how can he expect you to know that he doesn't want personal emails in reply to a message sent to a mailing list? Sure, he could put a header/footer on each mail that says, ``I prefer to not be a direct recipient of any replies to messages on mailing lists'' but short of that, how can he indicate such a preference? Seems like he was simply being ornery.
